Hi Everyone! My name is Allyson and I am a Psychology/Gender Studies student who is also completing the certificate in Employment Relations. My first job was a part-time position in a retirement home when I was in high school. I helped with food preparation after school and in the housekeeping department on week-ends. It was a wonderful, rewarding experience. When I was in this position, there was a strong focus on health and safety so the module that I am most excited about in this course is the one that covers workplace health, safety and injury.

Hey Allyson!
Part of the reason I was interested in taking this course was due to my own experiences where there was a strong focus on health and safety in the workplace. One time at work, there was even an incident where we had to follow all the health and safety procedures. It made me very curious to see how these guidelines are formed and how we can ensure they are easy for everyone to learn and to follow, especially if it is an incident that requires quick action. I have also volunteered at retirement homes and soup kitchens and I totally agree with you when you say it was a rewarding experience!

Your program sounds so interesting! I’ve always wanted to take psychology. Your first job sounds amazing! that must’ve given you experience in so many different dimensions. I’m excited as well for that particular module, have you taken Workplace Law (law203) it has a lot to do with workplace health, safety, and injury! you may enjoy it! I’m glad your working experiences have been positive and hope your future experiences are as well!

Hi Allyson, I completed my BA in psychology and am also pursuing the EMPR certificate! I think workplace health, safety and injury is an interesting and important topic to discuss as not many workers are aware of how to proceed in certain cases that may be deemed unsafe or cause injury.

Hey Allyson! I am also taking the employment relations certificate, much like yourself, the reason for wanting to take this certificate is a result of past jobs that I have had. I worked as a manager in a warehouse for a few summers, and there was a large emphasis placed on workplace health, safety, and injury. I hope that you are having a great semester so far, and I look forward to interacting with you more as the course progresses!

Hi Allyson! It sounds like you had a lot of fun in that job. Hopefully we both are able to learn useful materials to help us in our careers. I also was in the hospitality industry and enjoyed it greatly. It was indeed rewarding. Have you run into any employment-related issues? Or are there any aspects in the EMPR spectrum that you want to know more about? For me, is understanding the Canadian law more so I can help create a better work environment and avoid problems. Also learning more about labour unions.
